Photoinduced phase transitions in liquid crystalline systems

چکیده
In recent years, a field of research that is growing steadily is the photoinduced phenomenon in which the incident light itself brings about molecular ordering/ disordering of the liquid crystalline system. This particular aspect of photonics, in which light can be controlled by light as a stimulus, is being proposed as the future technology for high-speed information processing and photochromic materials. The azo compounds in particular, have been found to be promising candidates for optical data storage. An illustration of nature utilizing photoinduced effects is that of the biological photochrome bacteriorhodopsin found in the eye. Apart from their biological and technological importance, these systems exhibit photo-driven phase transitions, thus providing a new tool to study phase transitions and the associated critical phenomena. In this article we review some of our recent contributions to this field of photoinduced isothermal phase transitions in various liquid crystalline systems. In particular, we discuss the application of the random-field Ising model to describe the photoinduced nematic–isotropic transition, the influence of nanophase segregation to bring about a unique photo-driven disorder to order transition, local racemization phenomenon in bentcore banana B2 phase and the effect of high pressure.

Photoinduced isothermal phase transitions of liquid-crystalline macrocyclic azobenzenes.
Liquid-crystalline macrocyclic compounds, tethered by two or three azobenzenes bearing alkoxy side chains, exhibit isothermal phase transitions from liquid-crystal to isotropic as well as from crystal to isotropic phases upon light irradiation due to the drastic conformational change of their macrocyclic backbone.
متن کاملOn the mechanism of photoinduced phase transitions in ternary liquid crystal systems near thermal equilibrium.
According to their phase diagram, polyalkyl glycol ether dissolved in ternary solutions (water, alcane, and cyclohexane) lead to the formation of either liquid crystal phases or microemulsion phases. By photosensitization of the ternary system with laser dyes and choosing the adequate concentration and temperature conditions of these lyotropic systems, it is possible to photoinduce the phase tr...
متن کاملMesomorphic behaviors and photoconductive properties of binary systems composed of electron donor and acceptor mesogens
Mesomorphic behaviors and photoconductive properties in the binary mixture composed of electron donor (R10D) and acceptor (R10A) mesogens were investigated in three different phases, i.e. crystalline, liquid crystalline and isotropic liquid phases. Optoelectronic properties for R10DA (R10D:R10AZ50:50 mol%) were compared with those of the individual R10D and R10A in the different phases. The mag...

In this paper we present a study of photoinduced eeects, including molecular relaxation in a side chain liquid crystalline polymer. In particular, we have studied relaxation phenomena using Ellipsometry and Photoinduced Birefringence in pump-probe experiments, which were carried out as a function of temperature, optical pump intensity and sample preparation and history. Two speciic areas were i...
